The EchoStar's DISH Network Worldwide Digital Broadcast Center, located in Cheyenne, Wyoming, is the heart of EchoStar's Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) system. The facility receives downlinked video, audio and data information from various satellites, as well as pay-per-view programming and special programs from EchoStar's own studios,

then combines the information into a single digital stream and uplinks to its satellites. These satellites relay the programming streams to DISH Network customers throughout the continental United States.

EchoStar Europe
The summer of 2006 marked the start of a new era for EchoStar in Europe. EchoStar's three European offices consisting of 270 employees in the Netherlands, Spain and the UK joined together into one organization by adopting the same trade name - EchoStar Europe.
By combining EchoStar's engineering expertise in Europe and operating under the same trade name, EchoStar Europe is well positioned to create and develop DISH Network technology and extend its use around the world.
EchoStar International Corporation (EIC) started in a rented office in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, in 1988. The following year, it moved to its present location in Almelo, the Netherlands, and became a key center for distributing TV satellite receivers throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East. As technology developed, EIC's engineering department grew and gained invaluable experience in satellite television design and development.
In 1994, the Spanish office was established in Madrid in order to be closer to the Iberian and North African market that was booming in those years. Following sale of more than 600,000 receivers to the local Spanish TV platform Via Digital in 1997-98, an after-sales service department was established in Madrid.
In 1999, EchoStar Technologies Corporation decided to expand its hardware and software development groups, and looked for a team of engineers that would resemble the spirit of EchoStar in terms of continuously working to create low cost, innovative products and designs. Eldon Technology Limited, a very reputable electronics design house located in West Yorkshire, UK that had been at the forefront of television development since 1988, was an ideal fit. Netherlands
EchoStar International Corporation started in a rented office in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, in 1988. From the very beginning, the Almelo office has supported a large international engineering team that, in liaison with its counterparts in the U.S., develops a wide range of technically advanced DVB MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 solutions such as DVB-T, DVB-C and DVB-SMATV apart from it's core DVB-S platforms.

As a member of the DVB Group in Geneva, Almelo works in close partnership with the various international operators and other DVB parties, in order to establish international standards.

Spain
In 1994 the Spanish office was established in Madrid in order to be closer to the Iberian and North African markets that were booming in those years. Following the sale of over 600,000 receivers to the local Spanish TV platform Via Digital in 1997-98, an after-sales service department was established in Madrid.
The sales force of the Spanish office continued with the distribution of satellite TV products in Spain, Portugal and North Africa until 2001 when its area of responsibility was extended to include all of Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The operation in Madrid is now specifically dedicated to the assembly of new set-top-boxes for European TV operators and to the refurbishing of satellite receivers for the Spanish digital TV platform Via Digital.

Eldon Technology Limited, a very reputable electronics design house located in West Yorkshire, UK that had been at the forefront of television development since 1988, was an ideal fit. Specialising in the design of practical Digital Television solutions for worldwide markets, the Steeton office continues to play an active and influential role within the industry through its close associations with national and international standards authorities, which include the European DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting) and UK DTG (Digital TV Group).
The company's extensive range of capabilities in the design of electronic products for mass production, built up since formation in 1988, ensures that it can provide World class design services second to none. These services include product design, feasibility studies with early product costings, prototype development, value engineering and pre-compliance testing through to the assessment of customers' current production techniques.
With 4000 square metres of purpose-built laboratory space, the Steeton office is renowned for designing low-cost, high-reliability products for mass production, applying the very latest technology to produce economical, practical and reliable designs for both electronics and mechanical assemblies, especially in the areas of consumer electronics.

Ukraine
EchoStar Europe expanded east in the summer of 2007 with the opening of a new engineering centre in Kharkov, Ukraine. The Kharkov region is renowned for its strong science and technology background. Based on this and EchoStar’s very real need for more talented engineers, combining the two seemed the perfect fit.
Although starting with a relatively small team, EchoStar Ukraine is very important in helping to better support the company’s growing European business. In the United States, EchoStar has deployed over 20 million set top boxes to over 12 million subscribers of the Dish Network. Adding Video on Demand to Your Service
We can create a full Video on Demand system that works seamlessly on our advanced Digital Video Recorder units. Your customers can enjoy 24 hour access to movies you provide them, and they can use all the DVR features like pause, rewind, and fast-forward to enhance their viewing experience.
Using a technique of preloading content on to the hard disk drive on the user’s DVR called push video on demand, the customer will find the shows they want, available to them whenever they are ready to view them. We will work with you to set up the system that preloads the content, scheduling it to update as often as you wish. We will also customise the payment method to your meet your needs.
Our push VOD solution is a two-tuner satellite receiver and integrated digital video recorder (DVR) capable of recording up to 100 hours of programming. It is perfect for a two room solution because it offers DVR capabilities to two televisions.

The software that forms the basis for Dish Network’s set top boxes is available to you for advanced receivers that offer functionality like Video on Demand, MPEG4, High Definition video, multi-room DVR solutions, and home networking.
Although our core software is extremely adaptable, it’s most important feature is stability. Software that forms the basis for units used by millions of subscribers must be stable to keep support costs from spiralling out of control.

Software Stacks: Elgist
Elgist is EchoStar Europe’s software solution for use in digital terrestrial TVs and set top boxes. Elgist made its first appearance in the 1990s in integrated digital TV products. Since then there have been well over two million installations of Elgist in all types of digital TV equipment.
Elgist is a scalable solution that is suitable for applications from high end multi region plasma TVs to low cost, high volume set top boxes. Elgist’s scalability means a small footprint can be achieved (as low as 8MB), which reduces BOM cost, a vital competitive edge in today’s cutthroat set top box marketplace. Elgist’s software interfaces are modular and tested on a unit by unit basis ensuring high quality and bug free performance. It has been used in satellite, terrestrial, IDTV, and cable solutions, and it can be found in major markets around the world.
To maximise opportunities from the Free to Air world, Elgist also supports a number of interactive options, especially MHEG 1.06. Our MHEG 1.06 engine is supported via a well developed and tested interface. It can be tailored to suit different applications and profiles that may be mandated in the world markets.
Elgist’s new DVR solution “Orthos” covers all that a user expects from a modern multi-tuner DVR, including ease of use in supporting the Freeview playback feature set, and complex trick modes. Elgist supports the series linking broadcast information proposed by Freeview, allowing linked items to be recorded at the touch of a button. Although primarily intended for the popular twin tuner market, the Orthos DVR solution can also handle mixed multiple streams.
To speed the construction of user interfaces and reduce the expense of the customisation, we have developed eBuilder. eBuilder is a PC environment where menus can be designed or modified showing an exact replication of what the end user will see on the TV. A complete user interface can be created using eBuilder in a matter of hours.

The Dish Network was the first major operator in the United States to port the OpenTV middleware to its software core and today Dish Network boasts a large collection of interactivity applications that run seamlessly on OpenTV middleware. In Europe, we have extensive experience in the porting of MHEG, MHP and OpenTV interactivity middleware.
EchoStar Europe offers one of the leading MHEG engines in the UK market, and it has been certified by the Digital Television Group (DTG) as having passed their rigorous software test suite for the 1.06 profile.
MHEG has two primary advantages over other interactivity engines:

Rigorous Testing
We deliver rigorous, black box functional test services to ensure that we find all the problems in the product during the design phase. While doing this, we ensure we adhere to the project timelines. We test with end user eyes and, as such, examine everything that could undermine the perfect end-user experience, whether it is a bug or a design flaw.
The technical education, enthusiasm and persistence of our test engineers ensures that bugs are quickly identified and steps to reproduce are being explored and communicated. The centralized database we use for storing the bugs enables easy status reporting and generic access for all involved in the project.

Procedural testing
This type of testing is defined by test procedures. Test procedures are documents that clearly describe the various tests that need to be performed. Procedural testing is very reproducible by its nature as every test to perform is written down. Procedural testing does cover 100% of the functionality of the product. As test procedures are the basis for this type of testing it cannot commence before they are ready. Because of this procedural testing normally starts in the later phases of the project.
Exploratory testing
In contrast to procedural testing, exploratory testing is not driven by strict test procedures. During exploratory testing the tester is exploring the software by working with it. The tester is not following prescribed paths but is navigating in a random pattern that very much represents the way a normal end user is using the product. Exploratory testing is complementary to procedural testing as it adds a random effect, simulating the various ways an end user will use the product. It catches bugs that are caused by the interaction between the various states within the software.
Automated testing
Test automation can take over parts, or the full set, of procedural tests. Automating tests provides the opportunity to run tests 24/7.
